Imaginary Histories: A Mythology of My Own Making

“Was I lost again?” Coyote thought as he looked back to where the shaman had stood working. He closed his eyes.

“You had forgotten how to look for yourself”, said the ants. “You sought a path to your own heart on the horizon, forgetting that the journey always begins where your face ends.   That is where you must always start if you are ever to find what you are looking for.”

Coyote was troubled by his journey and wondered why he had not made better decisions than the ones that led him here.

"Have I missed a turn", he wondered to himself.

"You have missed many turns", said the ants, "and none at all.  But now you must make a new path for you have left yourself with no other, silly Coyote.  It can be done, but you must be brave for no one can lead you now."

"What if I fail", asked Coyote,  "will I cease to be?"

"Fail or not, you will cease to be that which you are now", said the ants.  "So it only matters that you begin.  The ending is not written by you, and it is foolish to think that it is."

He wanted to ask if he had done this to himself but he did not, for he already knew that the choices he had made were exactly the choices he was always going to make.
